It’s not just that pillars of democracy are threatened in Texas, and they are: liberties are being stolen, institutions kneecapped, everywhere norms of decency are eroding like the Hill Country soil. It’s that reality itself is under siege. The bedrock tools we use to know the world are being undermined and discredited. In their place, a base inhumanity is rushing in — that, and an ignorance I can only describe as planned.
