It saddens me that it comes to this. I know the many good people south of the border have their hands full dealing with a multi-front assault on the basic functions of government and responsibility. But it has been dismaying to see this ill treatment of a long-time ally, trading partner and friend go down with so little protest.
Beyond the economic pain this will cause on both sides of the border, I can’t get past that these moves are unilaterally erasing comprehensive trade deals that were negotiated over many years. There was considerable angst here in Canada about Free Trade in the 80s, and NAFTA in the 90s, in large part because we were making moves to integrate our economies. This came at great cost to many of our citizens and our industries as we removed protections in the name of open markets.
Amongst all the insults to our sovereignty, our cultures, and to us as people… it just highlights that one partner is not willing to keep its word when it makes a deal.
